The flimsy tools we carried with us from gate to hill have proved ineffectual against the native stone. The damage our miners do to their tools outpaces the output of our frustrated smiths twofold.
What I find most curious about the native stone is its malleability once excavated. The stone, which we have taken to calling Baylestrem, is like fine clay when placed in the palm of your hand, yet when it returns to the earth it solidifies at an almost alarming rate.
We have made a habit of storing the excavated material in crates to prevent its solidification until it is needed for construction...
