Love Lost - Selay and Lethar Vol. II

The list of dragons chosen to guard the Scale of Veeshan seemed to go on for an eternity as Lethar's heart sunk lower, his mind racing and in despair as he watched the lovely Selay prepare step forward to take a position. He could not bear to spend his years without her near him. When the names of the black dragons were announced, he held his mighty breath. Then he heard his name called.

Even with so distant and faded a vision, I could see how Lethar's wings and haunches slumped from the relief of his tension. It is clear he would follow Selay the Cascade wherever she may go, even to be able to see her was enough.

Selay looked sidelong to Lethar and gave him a small nod as she stepped forward to announce that it would be her honor to serve Veeshan and protect the scale for the rest of her life. Lethar could barely prevent his own great legs from rushing forward to volunteer, but he waited. When the call to the black dragons came, he stepped forward. No other black dragon budged as among them they knew that Lethar's might was unequaled and that the elders expected his involvement.

Much later, after many hours of counsel with the elders on the protocols and rules for guarding the scale, Selay and Lethar met, feeling as though for the first time they did not need to hide or worry about being seen together, even if it were only to prevent betraying their own feelings for the other. As fellow Scale Guardians, their time together would not be seen as inappropriate.

It was then that Lethar professed, or rather blurted, his love for Selay openly. It was then that he asked for her guidance on how to temper his heart. But she had no advice, only affirmation and requited love. Away from seeing eyes, they stood wing to wing, scale to scale, making the moments last as long as they could, for this would be the last time they could stand together. In the temple and around the scale they would all be separated by equal distance. And it was very unlikely more than one dragon would ever be permitted to leave the reliquary of the scale.

The last vision in Lethar's heart is perhaps one of the most profound I've ever experienced -- a truly broken heart when it stopped beating. The one true love in his life yearned to save him and protect him, and yet he turned his back on it. Lethar could not find the light in his heart after so many years of the pursuit of power and ownership of Veeshan's scale. Selay remained true to her love for Lethar until the very end, and yet Lethar found power more palatable than preserving the only love he would ever know.

And in his death, Lethar did not touch or feel any love for Selay as its essence was so deeply hidden within him. But I, Hemfar, have seen it in my vision and it's enough to know that this great black dragon was ever capable of love.
