Overview

Drawn from On the Town of: Kaladim official article.EQ1Primary · official

In a huge cavern in one of Butcherblock Mountains resides the city of the dwarves, ruled by King Kazon Stormhammer.

Long ago, before King Kazon Stormhammer declared the city to be Kaladim, the caverns were the lair of a great dragon. It was Jendl Mizebrite who happened upon the lair and fought the creature to the death. Jendl smashed the great dragon's skull with his trusty warhammer, but not before losing an arm. Thanks to his heroic deed, we now call these caves Kaladim.

The gaping mouth of the cavern leads to mines and tunnels that stretch on for miles into the nethermost core of the Butcherblock range. The entrance to the city is a grand cave with iron gates and guard towers on either side built out of hollowed trees that grown there. A river runs through the town with bridges of solid, sturdy dwarven craftsmanship crossing over it.

A very hardy, goodly people, the citizens of Kaladim keep a long memory of those who have wronged them and are steadfastly intolerant of all born under dark orientation. The dwarves of Kaladim hold a special adversity to ogres and the Teir'Dal, who are advised to avoid the city gates of Kaladim if they wish to remain living in the world. They are also highly protective of their valuable mines; any unwelcome visitors will have to answer directly to a Stormguard's blade if they dare to disrespect the dwarves' wishes.

King Kazon Stormhammer

The current ruler of the dwarves and king of Kaladim, Kazon Stormhammer is a much respected figure in dwarvish culture. Just, strong, compassionate, and wise beyond his years, he has assured the continuing prosperity of his people, which goes back to the foundation of Kaladim centuries past.

Notes on Maldura

Transcription of all references to Maldura that could be found in the histories of the Coldain.

From “Tales of the Elder Age” By Lorekeeper Wystro

… During the times of settlement, our people moved slowly towards the surface and found a bounteous land above. While some brave few ventured to explore the new lands above, many remained below ground in the trade villages of the deeper tunnels. Jealousy and pride still grew in the hearts of the dwarf lords, and battles between villages were frequent, as well as attacks by other enemies from the depths of the Underfoot.

Of all the trade villages, the rich mines of Maldura gave it the greatest wealth, but also attracted the most covetous attention. Declaring the need for security, the elders of Maldura encouraged construction of fortifications and soon it became the largest citadel below.

However, as the surface exploration continued, new sources of ore and gems were uncovered and artisans began to explore the properties of carbonite, feyiron, and other new metals previously unknown …

Overview

Drawn from History of the Hills of Shade compiled history.RPGCommunity article · best available source

The earliest records regarding the Hills of Shade are the old dwarven sagas of Kaladim. In these it is called the Land of Steam and Shadow, and is even today often used as ametaphor for death. Interestingly, these sagas also make itclear that even in the dwarves’ ancient history, this landwas already full of ancient tombs and twisted wildlife. Mostof the tales make no effort to explain where the tombs camefrom, but a few references to the “dark lords” has lead Teir’Dal scholars to claim the hills were a common burial ground for their Caerthielian Empire. By contrast, the few dwarven lore-masters who have studied the question claim that the origin of the tombs is not mentioned simplybecause it was unimportant, and thus is the result of some minor kingdom long since forgotten.

Not nearly as old or reliable are the legends perpetuated by the Crushbone orcs. Ancient maps in the possession of the orcs of Crushbone — written in an ancient orc dialect known only to a handful of scholars today (none of whom are among the Crushbone orcs) — call this region the “Land of Hungry Mountains.” These orc maps also show a temple to Rallos Zek, a druid stone circle, and two teleport pyramids, as well as a pictogram of a shissar, although one needs to read Ancient Orc to know this. Crushbone prophets claim the area as forbidden to any but prophets of Rallos Zek and they sometimes journey to the hills to seek guidance and visions, yet they seem to have no real idea about the region’s history.

The Maps of Myrist: Northern

Zone descriptionSony Online Entertainment · 2002

The northern area of Kaladim has two distinct passageways that lead from the mining district of the city. This portion is considerably smaller than the south half of the city, but is still very important to the prosperity and success of the dwarves of Kaladim. This district houses the guildhalls for the clerics and paladins of Kaladim.
