Overview

Kelethin is the wood elf tree village, named after the elf that negotiated the treaty with the treants of the Greater Faydark who are now the elves' greatest allies. The ancient forest city is an elaborate network of tree houses and platforms connected by rope bridges.

Several lifts within the Greater Faydark offer transportation to Kelethin. Due to its height up in the trees, young elves should watch their step while traveling throughout the city until they learn their way around.

The wood elves maintain close ties to their High Elf brethren. Their city is frequently attacked by orcish raiders, though they are well able to defend themselves. The wood elves have a democratic form of government, rather than a monarchy like their cousins, and the mayor of Kelethin is an elected official.

Guildmasters

Kelethin has a guildmaster for each class that is available to wood elves. Spell and tome merchants are also available for those classes. Here is a list of the main guildmasters:

Sylia Windlehands – (Bard) Heartwood Master – (Druid) Maesyn Trueshot – (Ranger) Tylfon – (Rogue) Regren – (Warrior)

Dear Father,

It is with a broken heart that I write you this letter. Though we have had disagreements in the past, never have I felt so hurt by what has passed between us. Some things cannot be forgiven.

I know it was hard for you when Mother died. I think a part of you shut down inside, and even though you wanted all your daughters to know they were loved, on some level you pushed us away. You built a barrier we simply couldn't break through.

Over the years, the distance between us grew. Though I don't want to blame it on any one thing, it certainly seemed as though you took more comfort in your bottle of ale than in the hugs and kisses of your daughters. You cared more about drinking than about us.

Your status in Kelethin suffered as well. You were once a noble paladin, renowned for your courage and honor. After Mother's death, none of that seemed to matter to you anymore. You gave up on your duty, just as you gave up on your own children.

It's true that we could have been better daughters. Jayla and Tayla were ever prone to causing trouble, but I think they were just expressing their grief and resentment over how cut off you seemed from us. That's not making an excuse, but rather stating a fact.

Is it any wonder that my sisters fell in with the wrong crowd? I believe their petty thefts and vandalism were a cry for help. The fact that these crimes shamed you at least forced you to express some emotion, even if it was disappointment and anger.

Nothing else after the dwarf-sagas is known to have been written about the Hills of Shade until the time of the elven Hejira, the sea journey that brought them from Tunaria to Faydwer. As newcomers to a vast and unknown continent, the elves wanted to explore their new home and its resources. Most of their efforts focused on the areas around the vicinity of current-day Felwithe and Kelethin, but smaller groups of elves set up communities anywhere there wasn’t already a local population. The very fact that the Hills of Shade were abandoned made it perfect for individuals seeking a new home, and relations between the elven newcomers and the indigenous dwarves were strong.

Thus, the small community of Durathin arose in the hills; though small and never prosperous, the town was kept safe by combined forces of high elf and dwarven guards. This cooperation was purely pragmatic — neither Felwithe nor Kaladim had an outpost near the center of the continent, and Durathin provided a useful place for scouts from both kingdoms to resupply.

The inhabitants of Durathin learned much about the dangers of the Hills of Shade and recorded their findings thoroughly. The deceptive shadows and changing landscape made maps useless within weeks of being drawn, but it was possible for explorers with a strong sense of direction to find their way around cautiously. One could navigate by using the coastline as a guide, and notorious or unusual regions within the hills kept the same identifying properties even when their appearance changed: Durathin citizens identified Bertoxxulous’ Cauldron, the Black Tombs, the Crawling Ruins, and the Grave Mounds. They also erected dozens of trail-markers to establish (relatively) safe paths through the hills. Slowly, a trickle of trade began between Kaladim and Kelethin, using Durathin guides to find the shortest route from the Butcherblock Mountains to the Greater Faydark. Durathin was poised to blossom into a large and prosperous trade community.
